Biography

Naima Shalhoub

Lebanese- American soul-singer, songwriter and social activist, Naima Shalhoub will be releasing her latest EP, Borderlands, live at Metro al Madina Beirut, Lebanon, on October 24th 2017, and online on Anghami. Co-produced by Naima Shalhoub and Eric Moffat, this 4-song EP features Tarik Kazaleh (AKA Excentrik) on electric guitar and vocals, Aaron Kierbel on drums and cajon, Issac Ho on keyboard, Ed Baskerville on cello, Chris Trinidad on bass guitar, and Naima Shalhoub on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, and was recorded and mixed by Eric Moffat at Unsound Studios. In May 2014 Shalhoub began facilitating weekly music sessions with incarcerated women in San Francisco County Jail and continues to build this into a larger project intersecting with her debut album Live in San Francisco County Jail released in December 2015 with 50% of album sales going towards the rehabilitation of incarcerated women. “Live in San Francisco County Jail is an ode to survival through struggle which searches for beauty and strength whenever it can...the music is effortlessly soulful; gentle like a fireside chat that is intimate, informative and reflective”. The Bay Bridged Singing in English, Arabic and Spanish, Naima has been featured in festivals in San Francisco, Oakland, Tampa, and has been invited to perform internationally in cities including Beirut, Montreal, Srinagar, Delhi, and Cairo. She has performed at acclaimed music venues such as The Great American Music Hall, SFJAZZ, Yoshi's, The New Parish and others. She has been interviewed on radio stations such as Bay Area’s KPFA, KPOO, KZSU, KALW and has received roles in Golden Thread Productions' The Fifth String, The African-American Shakespeare Company's production of Xtigone, The Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women, and others. After receiving her MA in Postcolonial Anthropology, Shalhoub also performed and taught workshops at Rutgers University, UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley, and others.
