Biography

EZI

Life flipped upside down. However, that’s when EZI really took control… Since creating her first acting resume, personally booking auditions, and cooking up covers on Garage Band at only 13-years-old, the New York-born singer, songwriter, artist, and performer quietly inched towards a career in entertainment by making one D.I.Y. move after another of her own volition. By 2016, the grind paid off with the lead role on a new Nickelodeon TV series and regular songwriting trips to Los Angeles. Fast forward six months, the show gets cancelled, she drops out of college, musical prospects feel uncertain at best, and depression sets in. At this point, the girl born Esther Zynn formally morphed into EZI…“For the first time, I basically got rid of any backup plan that I had, went against everything my parents taught me, and walked off a cliff,” she admits. “I didn’t know if I would get signed. I was bored. I was frustrated. I felt stuck. However, I needed to do more. I wasn’t going to ever live a normal life. So, I cut and dyed my hair and wrote and recorded songs. It was my first opportunity not to conform.” Following a chance encounter with Steve Madden at the Soho Steve Madden Store, those songs earned the songstress a deal with 5 Town Records as its inaugural signee and went on to comprise her AFRAID OF THE DARK EP. Acclaim and support from Refinery29, Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit, and more followed as songs like “DaNcing in a RoOm” generated streams in the millions. A mélange of ghostly synths, evocative lyrics, and powerhouse hooks, she emerged with an evolved presentation of pop that’s equally ambitious, sexy, and quirky (Think Robyn produced by Yeezus). The 2018 single “SoBer with YoU” offers intoxicating proof. Draped in dusky beats, her hypnotic croon details mixed emotions towards the object of one’s affection, playing out like a peek at a friend’s DMs or a LiveJournal entry (if that was still a thing). EZI developed that kind of candor as a child. Born to immigrants from Moscow (Dad taught violin and mom worked as a nurse), she embraced an outsider perspective, opting to write poetry at a young age. Feeling “out-of-place,” she decided to act “in order to escape.” By 16, she had begun writing songs with a producer friend in the city. Amidst chaos at home and difficulty in school due to dyslexia, she admittedly found solace in music. “Music saved me,” she admits. “Once I realized writing songs was a possibility, my whole world changed.” Now, EZI is in control with much more music and touring on the horizon. “EZI is the heightened version of Esther,” she leaves off. “She’s a badass. She’s who I desire to be. She represents living a dream. She represents the struggle and work to get here. I wasn’t handed any of this. I don’t want people to just see EZI; I want them to use my art as a mirror for themselves. You’re capable of anything. I want to prove that.” EZI is excited to release her beguiling new single, “Need You Like That” via 5 Town Records. It is the first taste of an upcoming EP, largely inspired by her experience growing up as a young woman in America who’s family immigrated from USSR. While writing, EZI was drawn to her father’s story, a classical violinist who arrived in the US in 1981 with just $200 and his violin. Of the track she notes, “This song is about temptation, but keeping the lyrics ambiguous was very much an intentional choice. I made it on a whim at 1am in a basement room in New York and really stepped away from myself when making it. I eventually asked my dad to come join me in the studio and play violin on the track, which made the whole experience very special.”
